About This Work
Breath of Myth was composed in 2025 on commission from the Wind Band of Kisuki Junior High School in Unnan City and was premiered under the direction of its adviser, 西真紀. The same band subsequently performed it as its free-choice piece at the All Japan Band Competition. The work is structured around images drawn primarily from Izumo mythology, as well as the history and landscape of the region. It weaves together various scenes: the presence of a great serpent suggested by ominous sounds, the lives of the people, traditional tatara ironmaking, and the confrontation between Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Yamata-no-Orochi. While these images form one imagined story, I hope that each performer will play with their own freely conceived ideas and worlds in mind.
The occasion that led to this work was an earlier performance of my piece Kamuy by the Wind Band of Kisuki Junior High School in Unnan City. My meeting with the band’s adviser at the time, 西山和志, developed into an important connection. When the band’s adviser changed, he introduced me to the new adviser, 西真紀, and this created the opportunity for the present work. Music has a story, but the path leading to the birth of that music also has a story of its own. This is truly a work born from a succession of meaningful connections.
Use of Traditional Japanese Instruments
The percussion parts use traditional Japanese instruments, but possible substitutes are also specified. Please choose freely according to your ensemble’s instrumentation and circumstances. The wadaiko part is intended to be played by the same performer who plays timpani, changing instruments as required. However, if a wadaiko is unavailable, the work is written so that it can also be performed with timpani alone. (Daisuke Ehara)
