About This Work

This work was composed in 2025 on a commission from the Obama Junior High School Wind Band in Unzen City and was performed as the school’s free-choice piece in the All Japan Band Competition. I composed it with the aim of bringing out each player’s individuality. Its subject is Miguel Chijiwa: a young man who crossed the sea and set out for foreign lands as a member of the Tenshō embassy to Europe. In three movements, the work depicts the course of his inner journey through music.
In the first movement, I depicted a young man setting out and confronting rough seas, caught between anxiety about entering an unknown world and expectations full of hope. Amid surges of sound as turbulent as the waves, his powerful, resolute gaze emerges.
The second movement expresses a heart stirred by encounters with other cultures and the opening of doors within the mind. Scattered through it are memories of the foreign landscapes he saw and the music he heard. In the latter half, fragments of Mille regretz, composed by Josquin des Prez and said to have been heard by Miguel Chijiwa, appear. There are various accounts of the music he actually encountered, and no certainty about it; in this work, however, I quote it as a fragment of his memories of Europe.
In the third movement, a profound longing for his distant homeland pervades the music, and the archetypal landscapes of Japan and the sounds of festival music arise from his memory. The festival music heard here is not an actual example, but is depicted as an imagined sound rooted in his memories. Amid the brilliant music, his enduring prayer for his homeland dissolves into the sound, bringing the work to a close.
