この作品は、2025年に雲仙市立小浜中学校吹奏楽部の委嘱により作曲しました。元々は混合八重奏として作曲した後、フレシキブル（フレックス）編成用に再編集しました。
長崎県雲仙市小浜町には、山領と雲仙の二か所に「鬼石」と呼ばれる巨石があり、古くから鬼にまつわるさまざまな伝承が残されています。『温泉山縁起』には、かつて温泉岳にいた鬼が僧・行基の力によって石になったという伝承が記され、男鬼「空仙鬼」と女鬼「難林王」が、それぞれ二つの鬼石に結びつく存在として語り継がれています。このほかにも、鬼が巨大な石を背負って山を登る途中、その重さに耐えきれず置いていったという話や、石には今なお霊魂が宿っているという言い伝えが残されています。長い年月を経てもそこに佇み続ける巨石は、単なる自然の石でありながら、どこか人ならざるものの存在を感じさせます。「石」と「鬼」、「現実」と「伝承」という二つの姿が、《デュアル・ストーン ～鬼の宿る石～》の着想のもととなっています。

原曲はフルート、クラリネット、アルトサクソフォンの木管楽器と、トランペット、ホルン、トロンボーン、ユーフォニアム、テューバの金管楽器による八重奏です。それぞれの楽器が持つ音色や性格を生かしながら、8パート全員が音楽の中で重要な役割を担うように書かれています。限られた人数の中でも、音色の組み合わせや楽器同士の対話、響きの変化によって、鬼石の持つ力強さと神秘性を感じさせる音楽を目指しました。

この作品はフレキシブル編成で演奏することができます。各パートは、記載された楽器の中から選択して演奏してください。太字で記載された楽器は、原曲の編成で使用されている楽器です。 原曲の編成に限らず、それぞれの団体の編成に応じて柔軟に楽器を選択することができます。なお、作品本来の音色やバランスをより生かすため、Part 1　フルート、Part 3　アルトサクソフォンでの演奏を推奨します。

This work was commissioned in 2025 by the Obama Junior High School Wind Band of Unzen City.
It was originally composed as a mixed wind octet, then reworked for flexible (Flex) ensemble.

In Obama, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, two colossal stones known as Oni-ishi (Demon Stones) stand at Sanryo and Unzen.
Numerous legends associated with oni have been handed down.

The Onsen-zan Engi relates that demons who once dwelt on Mount Unzen were transformed into stone by the Buddhist monk Gyoki.
The male oni, Kusengi, and the female oni, Nanrin-o, are said to be bound respectively to the two stones.

Other accounts tell of an oni who abandoned a huge stone halfway up the mountain under its weight, and say that spirits dwell in the stones even today.
Though they are simply stones, their enduring presence suggests something beyond human.

The duality of stone and oni, reality and legend, provided the inspiration for Dual Stone.

The original version is scored for a mixed octet of flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba.
Each of the eight parts is written to play an essential role, exploiting the distinctive colours and characters of the instruments.

Within a limited number of players, the combination and dialogue of timbres and changing resonance seek to evoke both the strength and mystery of the demon stones.

This flexible edition may be performed using any of the listed instrument choices.
Instruments in bold are those used in the original instrumentation.

Ensembles may select instruments freely according to their available players.
For the intended colour and balance, Flute in Part 1 and Alto Saxophone in Part 3 are recommended.
